Infant boy Sammie and his family left Clinton, Missouri in a covered wagon with mother, Hattie Mitchell Turk, and father, Sam Turk and his grandparents, Christopher Columbus Turk and Lusara [Gilmer] Turk, and headed for California in the spring of 1893. They joined family already working in the booming Camp Badger logging camp.
Shortly after arriving in Camp Badger, Sammie's two older sisters, Louise Rowe Turk and Irene Mitchell Turk, also died in their Camp Badger cabin. The eldest, 5-year-old Sally Mosher Turk b.1888, survived. Sammie's sister, Sally, would grow up to marry Louis Burton Lindley and give birth to Louis B Lindley, Jr. who would grow up to be the actor "Slim Pickens."
