Son of Jay and Eunice (Sutherland) Hayden

Maynard J.V. Hayden was born on May 15, 1930, in Ottumwa, IA, to Jay and Eunice (Sutherland) Hayden. Following graduation from Eldon, IA High School in 1947, he farmed for five years and then attended Drake University at Des Moines, IA. His education at Drake Law School was interrupted by the Korean conflict when he served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Maynard practiced law in Indianola forming a law partnership in 1966 with M.D. Hall, and Dale Ewalt. Stephen A. Hall became a partner later.

Maynard served as Warren County attorney from 1964 to 1967. He was appointed a judge of the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa in 1993 and later served as chief judge until he was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1983. He retired in 1996, then continued as a senior judge until 2004.

Maynard and Sharon Lee Stevenson, the love of his life, were married December 27, 1953. Sharon passed away on September 19, 2008. His brother, Thomas, and sister, Patricia, also preceded him in death.
He leaves behind his children and grandchildren. Maynard is also survived by his identical twin brother, brother and sisters.

Judge Hayden was a member of many professional and civic organizations, including but not limited to, the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, Association of Iowa Trial Attorneys, Iowa Defense Council, Iowa Judges Association, a long-term member of the Iowa Crime Commission, and Rotary International Club. He was a 45-year member of American Legion Post 165.
