Obituary

R. T. Akers

R. T. Akers was born August 26, 1847, in Pike County, Pennsylvania, moved to Johnson County, Iowa, in 1857, thence to Taylor County in 1874, settling on his farm five miles northeast of Gravity where he resided till 5 years ago, when he moved into Gravity, the place of his death, which occurred May 19, 1909, after an illness of three months with bone cancer.

He was married to Amanda Slyker, Aug. 20, 1868. To this union were given eleven children, nine living and two dead. All the children are living near Gravity except two, Mrs. Iva Straw of Jasper, Minn., and Mrs. Lydia [Filena] French of Loop City, Neb. He enlisted in the army in 1864 and continued till the close of the War.

He was an industrious citizen, a very kind neighbor, a loving husband and father and was highly respected in the community where he lived so long, and many mourn his departure from this material world.

The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal Church on the following Thursday at 10 o'clock in the presence of a very large congregation of sympathizing friends and relatives by Rev. W. L. Dunlavy and Rev. Parmer, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Gravity cemetery by the G. A. R., there being about forty of the post in attendance.
