SHOCK CAUSES WOMAN'S DEATH - Mrs. Joseph Hower Collapses at Casket of Husband

Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Hower, 80, widow of the late Joseph Hower, died Thursday afternoon from the shock of seeing her husband in the casket. Death occurred in the Black funeral home.

Mr. and Mrs. Hower had resided at the Adams county infirmary since 1935. Mr. Hower died Monday and the funeral was set for Thursday at 9:45 o'clock in the Black funeral home and 10 o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church.

Mrs. Hower was brought to the funeral home at 8:30 o'clock. After viewing the body she sank into a coma, from which she never aroused. A physician was summoned, and warned against moving her. Death came from shock and old age at 5:30 o'clock. Because of Mrs. Hower's illness only brief services were held for Mr. Hower.

Mrs. Hower was born August 14, 1856 the daughter of John and Mary Barnhart, in Indiana and had lived here all her life. Surviving are three children, Carl and Frank of Decatur and Mrs. Mary Waters of Huntington . A grandchild, Mrs. Georgia Hicks, lived with the couple until a few years ago. There are 11 other surviving grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Ann Smith of Decatur, survives.

Decatur, Jan. 15 - Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Hower, 80, whose husband died Monday of this week, collapsed while viewing his body at the Black funeral home in this city Thursday morning, and died Thursday night without regaining consciousness.
The attending physician attributed her death to shock and the infirmities of old age. Mr. and Mrs. Hower had resided at the county infirmary for more than a year.
Mrs. Hower was born in Indiana August 14, 1856, a daughter of John and Mary Barnhart. Surviving are three children, Carl and Frank Hower of Decatur and Mrs. Mary Waters, Huntington, and a sister, Mrs. Ann Smith of Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with burial in the Decatur cemetery. Mr. Hower was buried Thursday.
