Elizabeth Twining, botanic artist and social reformer. Largely educated at home. She made several continental tours, was a competent botanist and produced fine-quality flower illustrations. Her two-volume "Illustrations of the Natural Order of Plants" used the natural order of plant classification of Alphonse de Candolle, rather than the Linnaean classification. Early in life, she became involved in teaching, with a particular interest in the poor. She belonged to the women's section of the Church of England Temperance Society, and became a workhouse visitor. When her parents died, she moved to Dial House, next to St Mary's Church in Twickenham. She set up St John's Hospital, nearby. Her first matron, Agnes Edgington, is buried alongside her. Elizabeth was an early supporter of the campaign for women's rights.
