KERRVILLE — Kerrville South was the scene Friday of another incident of grisly family violence after a man shot and killed his estranged wife at her friends' house, and then drove to their former residence and turned the same shotgun on himself.
Janie Garcia Duque, 33, the victim of a shotgun wound to the chest, was pronounced dead by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Betty Bumcy at the emergency room of Sid Peterson Hospital, according to Kerr County Sheriff Frances Kaiser.
The shooting was reported to Kaiser's office at 9:40 a.m. by the victim's friend, who was one of several witnesses to the shooting, Kaiser said.
Burncy later arrived at the couple's Hidden Acres mobile home at the remote end of Katy Lane at 12:47 p.m. where she pronounced Arthur Duque, 35, dead from one shotgun blast to the head. Kaiser said. A suicide note was found, along with a 12-gauge, single shot shotgun. Kaiser did not want to reveal the contents of the note at this time.
"We assume it was the same weapon," said the sheriff. Both bodies, she said, have been sent to Austin DPS for autopsy.
The couple's four children, all under the age of 15, were in school at the time of their parents' deaths.
Arthur Duque reportedly called his estranged wife Friday morning where she and the children were staying to tell her he was coming by to give her some money,
the sheriff said. Upon his arrival at the residence, Janie Duque went out to meet him. Witnesses said he shot her and then sped away in his black Chevrolet pickup, according to Kaiser.
An all-points bulletin was issued for the pickup, and a was located at the Katy Lane residence. Assisted by officers from the Kerrville Police, Texas Department of Public Safely and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Kaiser said they approached the Katy Lane residence with caution. "We didn't know if he was alive or dead," she said.
