At his home, Oconee, Vermillion county, Oct 8, 1887, Rev John Slater, after thirty years or more of active service in the ministy of the gospel of Christ.

John Slater was born in Hamshire county, Virginia, on the 15th of September 1820; made a profession of Christianity in November, 1839, and united with the ME church, and soon after was licensed to exhort and later to preach. He was married to Eliza H McVicker Sept 15, 1840. There were born to them four children, two of whom passed on before him. His devoted wife and son, Emerson Slater, of Berlin, and daughter, Mrs Emilins Makemson, of Oakwood and his son-in-law, Mr Saunders, remain to mourn his loss, yet not without hope. He entered the Illinois conference in November, 1853; his first charge, New Albany, 1854-5; his second, Mariensville, 1856-7; afterwards Taylorville, 1858-9; Ramamed, 1880; Blue Mound, 1881-2; Oconee, 1882-3; Pilot, 1884-5. Thus closed his labors, and he was summoned to his eternal home on the morning of Oct 8, 1887. Rev Slater was a man of great earnestness, gifted in language, and always ready to respond to every call when his public services were demanded. His remains, agreeable to request, were brought to Pleasant Plains Cemetery for interment. Being a member of the AF and AM, he was borne to the ME church by the brotherhood. Some appropriate and very fitting remarks were made by Rev Alkir.
