Major League Baseball Player, Manager. He was an infielder for twelve seasons (1936 to 1940, 1942 to 1948) with the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a member of two American League Pennant-winning teams (1944 Browns, 1946 Red Sox) and appeared in nine career total World Series games. In 1,151 regular season games, he had 1,075 hits and a .256 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, Gutteridge served as a coach for fourteen seasons (1955 to 1966, 1968 to 1968) with the Chicago White Sox and was on Al Lopez's staff when they won the 1959 American League Pennant. He also managed the White Sox for parts of two seasons (1969 to 1970). He later served as a scout with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals. He attended Pittsburg State University in Kansas and was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Gutteridge passed away on the 72nd anniversary of his big league debut (September 7, 1936).
