Leigh E. Speltz, 475 Main Street, well known retired Winona jeweler, died Saturday evening at 6:30 o'clock at his home after an illness of several years.
Mr. Speltz, who was 50 years of age, was born in Rollingstone, Winona County, March 22, 1882. he came to Winona in 1902, and was employed by in the R. J. Thierstein and later at the Morgan Jewelry stores. In 1907, he purchased the Thierstien Jewelry store which he operated until 1927 when he was forced to retire because of ill health.
Surviving Mr. Speltz are his wife, formerly Gerturde Steuben (Steichen); two daughters, Dorothie and Elaine of Winona; three brothers, Peter, John and Felix of Rollingstone, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at the St. Thomas Cathedral Tuesday at 9 a.m., the Rev. Louis D. O'Day officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be E. F. Heim, C. P. Biesanz, L. F. Murphy, C. C. Schuler, C. F. Witt and W. J. Warmington. Active pallbearers will be Walter Speltz, Alex Speltz, Frank Speltz, Arthur Weis, Herbert Speltz and Andrew Botzet, nephews of Mr. Speltz.
