Karen Bottolfsen, born on February 14, 1833 in Norderhaugs Prestegjeld (Parish) in Ringerike, Norway. Karen immigrated from Norway in 1850 with her parents Bottolf and Marthe and 2 brothers, Martin and Nils. The parents, Nils and Karen all located in the Paint Creek area of Allamakee County Iowa. The brother Martin lived and worked for a few years in Galena Illinois before settling down at Paint Creek also. While in Galena he became acquainted with Ulyses S. Grant. Karen married Knud Steen in a double ceremony with her brother Nils and his bride Maren Larsen on November 7, 1856 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Allamakee County Iowa. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Ulrick Vilhelm Koren.
Their first child was Berte Marie, born August 17, 1857. Baptized September 15, 1857. Berte Marie died Dec 7, 1862 in Allamakee County.
Karoline, born March 3, 1859. Baptized April 17, 1859.
Hanna Andria, born April 11, 1861. Baptized June 9, 1861.
Berent Magnus, born July 12, 1863. Baptized July.25, 1863.
Carl Andrias and Berte Marie (twins), born September 23, 1865. Baptized July 25, 1863. Berte Marie (the twin) died August 28, 1881. Buried this Cemetery as Bertha Marie.
Christine Mathilda, born March 18, 1870. Baptized April 10, 1870.
Otto Nikolai, born February 20, 1872. Baptized April 21, 1872.
Klara Gunhilda, born July 21, 1875. Baptized September 12, 1875.
The third child Hanna and her husband Ole Nelson are both buried in this cemetery as well as the second child,Karoline, and her husband Gustav Nelson.
