James Edwin Foster was a child of Oregon Pioneers, Robert Foster (1831-1892) and Hannah (Froman) Foster, (1835-1892). His parents had come West in 1845 on the Oregon Trail and the infamous Meek Cutoff. The wagon train had been led by Stephen Meek and consisted of 1,000 persons in 200 wagons. Many people lost their lives along the way and all would most likely have died had it not been for help from a native who guided them to the Deschutes River. A relief party that had left in an attempt to obtain provisions before survivors starved finally arrived in late September, 1845, but it was too late for countless settlers.
He had seven brothers and two sisters, all born on land that had been in the family since his parents had settled there in the mid 1800's. James was b.Nov 24th, 1872 on the family farm, about 7m. south of the town of Albany in the Tangent-Orleans* area. He attended school and helped out on the farm as a youth, and was given his own farm, a portion of the original family farm (donation land claim), as an adult, in the Orleans-Tangent area by 1900 as he was registered there in that U.S. Census. His brother, Samuel, stayed with him, helping him on their combined lands until he died on pneumonia in 1925 at the age of 48. James knew the Burkhart family and married Plessa Caroline "Carrie" Burkhart on Jan 2nd, 1901 at her parent's home in Albany. Note: She was a great granddaughter of John Burkhart, her parents being Charles Marion and Mary Ellen (Morgan) Burkhart, and her paternal grandparents being Coriolanus Domarus and Caroline Lavinia (Goff) Burkhart.
The happy couple set about creating a home for themselves and were blessed with three lovely children. Little Eva was born on Nov 17, 1901, Charles Robert was born May 31st, 1903 and Elden was born in 1907. Sadly, though, life is not always happy. Their little girl, Eva, died at the age of 14 from a burst appendix in Albany's St.Mary's hospital in 1915. [I have seen so many people who died from this before and during this time it breaks my heart. I wasn't aware for a long time that doctors couldn't remove an appendix and it would rupture, causing peritenitus and death, until recent times. It is so terribly sad. Many of my family members died this way. Many were school children in their early teens and some were in their early 20's.]. Their 2nd son, Charles, married Irene, b.1909, but had a brain tumor which caused his early demise at the age of 38 yrs. on May 3rd, 1941. Their youngest son, Eldon, whom I've not been able to find out much about, married a lady named Milla before 1930 and they were living with his parents, James and Carrie, that year. James lived a long life, passing away at the age of 75 years of age from heart failure in 1948. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery. Carrie was now a widow but Eldon, and probably his wife, were still with her as he signed her death certificate when she had a heart attack and left this life in 1952, She was buried by her husband at Riverside Cemetery. Eldon died the following year, 1953, and is buried with his parents, brother and sister, together at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Oregon, with the descendants of other pioneer families of Linn County, Oregon.
