World War II French Resistance Figure. Originally trained by the Red Cross as a nurse, she was forced out of her assigned military hospital when the Vichy government would no longer allow Jews to work. She and her husband, Miron Zlatin, then set up L'Maison d'Izieu to care for and hide Jewish children. On April 6, 1944, while she was away from the house, it was raided by the Lyon Gestapo; her husband was shipped to Estonia and shot, while the 44 children were sent to Auschwitz. Sabine Zlatin testified against Klaus Barbie at his trial in 1987. A museum was opened in the house she had used during the war in 1994. Her story was told by Serge Karsfeld in his 1984 book "The Children of Izieu: A Human Tragedy".
