Son of Johnathan Wells of North Carolina and Letitia Way.
Reared on the farm, and was given such an education as the frontier schools afforded. He came with his father to Andrew County, MO in the fall of 1857, and on March 29, 1860, his marriage with Sarah E. Richards was celebrated.

He held various township offices, both in Putnam and Andrew counties, and in 1886 was elected county judge.

-Margaret "Maggie" Ellen (m: Israel Knappenberger), born June 18, 1861;
-Louvina Jane (m: John M. Townsend), born February 18, 1863;
-Samuel C., born February 3, 1864 and died April 25,1864;
-Alzina A., born June 19, 1865-died Jan 14 1908 (m: Charles G. Townsend);
-William H., born February 17, 1867, and died January 5, 1868;
-Emma Izella, (m: John W. Montgomery) born June 29, 1869

CPL Francis Marion Wells, enlisted on 21 January 1862 by Major Alvin in St. Joseph Missouri and was mustered into service Captain Horace B. Johnson’s Battery, Light Artillery, (L Company), 1st Missouri State Militia Cavalry January 21, 1862. Honorably discharged on– December 30, 1862 in Palmya Missouri. Francis fought in the battles of Kirksville, Whaley’s Mill, and other engagements
