He enlisted in the second regiment, company C, Wisconsin Cavalry on September 3 1864 for a term of one year and was mustered out June 14, 1865 at Memphis, Tenn.
He married Louisa Sarah Loomis on July 31, 1868, Eden Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Two children were born of this union, Leon Osmar Haskin born March 24, 1869: and Effie Elinor Haskin born September 29, 1871. Elmer farmed on part of the farm which had been his fathers
Elmer lost his right eye after the war when his gun misfired. Because of this accident and the privations endured in the war, he suffered an early death,November 11, 1874 only 31 years of age.
