JONES, LOVIE BROWNING

Lovie Browning Jones, age 86, and a lifelong resident of Pride, she passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in Merritt Island, Fla. She died in the arms of her eldest granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Anne Hamner. Mrs. Jones was born July 17, 1915, to William Henry and Lovie Browning. She graduated from Pride High School in 1932, where she and her brother, Bill, were the state of Louisiana mixed doubles tennis champions. She was also declared runner-up to the state ladies' singles championship title after battling her opponent in a two-day tennis match. She continued her education in Natchitoches at the then Louisiana Normal College. She graduated in 1936, with a bachelor of science degree in home economics education. While in college she lettered in tennis and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority, Euthenics Club, Seekers After Knowledge, Literacy Society, Young Women's Christian Association and the Women's Athletic Association. She taught vocational home economics to thousands of young ladies and men for 49 years in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. Her teaching career began in a two-story frame building with a wood stove for heat. She daily carried wood to provide comfort for her students. From these humble beginnings, Mrs. Jones developed the home economics department into a complex that included a cooking laboratory with six kitchen areas featuring refrigerators and electric stoves, a sewing laboratory, dining and living room area, laundry room, and a bedroom, to teach her students how to care for the sick. She was a proponent and teacher of life skills for all students throughout her career. Another major concern she had for her students was their ability to set and attain goals for themselves. A former student who heads a local company emphasizes that Mrs. Jones taught her to organize meetings, set agendas and always believe in herself, that she could achieve whatever she set out to do. Former students agree that Mrs. Jones' influence and her insistence on excellence continued past high school through their adult lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lovie Kirby and William Henry Browning; her sister, Edna Browning Chaney; brothers, Alvin Kirby Browning and Allen Lea Browning; and husband, John Paul Jones. She is survived by a sister, Elma Browning Lea; a brother, William Thomas Browing; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Elgin Hamner of Hot Springs, Ark.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Jane Jones of Camden, Ark.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Paula and Dr. Tim Tripp of Davis, Calif. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Anne Hamner of Coco, Fla., Elgin Alvon Hamner IV and wife Heather, Jonathan Browning Hamner and Mary Elizabeth Hamner, all of Hot Springs, Bryan Browning Jones and David Allen Jones of Camden, and Patrick Nolan Tripp, Kathleen Anne Tripp, Jennifer Ann Tripp and Bernadine Elizabeth Tripp, all of Davis. Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary. Visitation is at Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Pride, from 8:30 a.m. until religious services at 10 a.m. Friday, conducted by Dr. Mack Stewart, assisted by the Rev. Dale Phillips. She will be buried in the Browning Family Section of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with her parents and siblings. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and a great-nephew, James Bourgeois. Affectionately known as "Puddin" for her sweet and kind nature from infancy, she touched many lives and was always careful to let others be aware that her success came from a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ.
