Chris Matthews was a man of many talents. A former county supervisor for Pajaro Valley,A Playwright, A Social Justice Activist. and the for many of us a special place in our hearts as the founder and owner of a Santa Cruz landmark, The Poet and Patriot Irish Pub.

In the 1970's he moved to Santa Cruz County and served as a paratrooper in the Army's 508th Airborne Division. He later spoke out against the conflict in Vietnam and founded the Bill Motto Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 5888 in Santa Cruz, where he served as chaplain.

In the Mid 1970's he took part in the "Ohlone Occupation" which was a battle to protect American Indian burial grounds in Watsonville. He also worked to help find jobs for former convicts through the Project Hope program.

in the 1980's he opened The Poet and Patriot, it became a second home for a generation of Santa Cruz writers, political activists and Irish partisans.

After he published his book of poetry titled, " An Egg Like Me", He wrote a play and recieved acclaim in the 1990's in Ireland and Los Angeles for his play,"A Flag To Fly" about Irish soldiers who deserted the U.S. Military to side with Mexican forces in the Mexican-American War. He also directed and acted in the play which premired at The Veterans Hall in Santa Cruz. One critic wrote " Matthews directs with passion and compassion"


In a story from the local paper, His wife, Sue Heinz was quoted, " The presence and love in his heart and spiritual quality of him and how he cared for people was unbelievable."
