Joseph Webster Gamble's great-great grandfather, John Gamble Sr., was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1748. John and his wife Elizabeth Kennedy Gamble (1751-1822) immigrated to America in 1811. John died in Pennsylvania in 1830.

Joseph's great-grandfather, John Gamble Jr. (1777-1828), immigrated to America in 1801 and returned to Ireland to bring to America the rest of his family in 1811.

Joseph's grandfather, Justus Gamble (1812-1849), was born in South Carolina and died in Missouri.

Joseph's father, George Francis Gamble (1836-1862), died in the American Civil War, at the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi, in September 1862, at age 26. Joseph's widowed mother Eliza Jane (Rogers) Gamble (1830-1910) remarried Civil War veteran Marmaduke Cantrell after George's death.

Joseph was the husband of Mary Ann (Miller) Gamble (1858-1917) and the father of eleven biological children and one adopted child:

Anna, 1876-1908
Ross, 1878-1966
Edward, 1880-1902
Albert, 1883-1928
Matthew, 1885-1974 (twin)
Lawrence, 1885-1964 (twin)
Ellen, 1888-1967
Aaron, 1890-1973
Nancy, 1890-1979 (taken in after her mother Nancy Rutledge died in childbirth)
Grover, 1892-1978
Austin, 1895-1937
Elsie, 1901-1985

Ten of their 11 children had offspring, producing 67 grandchildren for Joseph and Mary Gamble, born from the late 1890s to 1949. As of the 100th anniversary of his death -- March 8, 2023 -- three of these grandchildren are living: Wilma (daughter of Grover), turning 89 in 2023; Faye (daughter of Lawrence), turning 80 in 2023; and Patricia (daughter of Lawrence), turning 77 in 2023.

Joseph and Mary are also the great-grandparents of at least 201 great-grandchildren.
