Fri., Nov. 16, 1900
There was a large attendance yesterday afternoon at the funeral of Horace Clark and the St. Paul's M. E. Church South, was filled with friends of the deceased. The exercises conducted by Rev. J. F. G. Finley, were under the auspices of Phoenix Lodge, No. 178, F. and A. M. and the member of Valley Lodge, No. 27 K. of P., of which the deceased was also a member turned out to assist in the obsequies.
The services at the church were very impressive, the music being by the choir, assisted by Miss Mae Beam, who sang a solo most impressively. The pall bearers were from both lodges, being Hon. Byron Waters, A. J. Downer, and John Clark for the Masonic lodge and W. A. Vale, Thomas Hadden and T. McFarlane for the Knights of Pythias. At the grave the ceremonies were conducted by the officers and members of Phoenix Lodge, No. 178, F. and A. M.
The deceased was born in Antwerp, Jefferson county N. Y. in 1830. His father, Hiram Clark, was of English descent and New England parentage, a blacksmith by trade, and pioneered at Independence, Missouri, as early as 1847. He came to California in 1850, and died at San Bernardino in 1853.
Horace Clark grew up at Independence, which was then a small town on the western frontier and participated in many of the thrilling events of early days, incident to the immense emigration from east and south to the Pacific coast, a large share of which made Independence its place of rendezvous for departure westward. Horace Clark when little more than a youth commenced carrying United States mail between independence and Salt Lake, and in 1853 was with Sheldon Stoddard, John Hunt, Sidney P. Waite and the lamented John Mayfield, among the first to carry the mail between Salt Lake and San Bernardino. Later, he for years engaged in freighting across the desert, and latterly for about nine years was an employee of San Bernardino city and in charge of the city park and pavilion. He was a member of the San Bernardino Society of California Pioneers, a man of positive nature, strict integrity and held the esteem of all who knew him.
The deceased leaves surviving him four sons, William, George, Benjamin and Dudley, and four daughters, Mrs. Jennie Wilson, Mrs. Oscar Carson, Mrs. J. F. Worley and Nannie Clark. The wife of his youth, who was Susannah Cole, died two years ago.
