LEWIS BARNES, FORMER LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF, DIES
Lewis E. Barnes, age 60 years, of Gary, former resident of Wheeler, died Tuesday morning in Augustana hospital, Chicago, after submitting to three operations.
Mr. Barnes was secretary-treasurer of the Barnes Ice and Coal company, Gary, and also served as sheriff of Lake county.
He was a great sports lover, and at one time played with independent baseball teams at Wanatah, Hobart and Hamlet. A team, called the Barnes Athletic club, sponsored by Mr. Barnes, won the Lake county baseball championship in 1933 and 1934.
Mr. Barnes was born at Wheeler, Ind., where his father, a farmer, often occupied the pulpit as a supply pastor, although not an ordained minister.
In addition to serving as sheriff of Lake county for two terms, from 1916 to 1920, he served as trustee of Hobart township from 1909 to 1913.
Surviving are the widow, four daughters, and two brothers, Clarence Barnes of Gary, and John W. Barnes of Wheeler.

LOCALS.--Lewis E. Barnes, prominent businessman of Gary, Ind., and father of Barbara Barnes of the Barnes school of dance of this city, died in a Chicago hospital October 8 after an extended illness. Mr. Barnes was vice-president of the Barnes Ice and Coal company and prominent in banking circles. He was buried in Gary last Friday. Miss Barnes, learning of the impending death of her father, went east by plane but arrived too late. She returned by plane, reaching Portland Sunday. Mr. Barnes visited in Salem last January.
