OBITUARY: The La Cross Tribune (La Cross, Wisconsin) - 30 Dec 1927, Fri - page 11.

Charles Kenyon Dies in Hospital at Age 77.

GALESVILLE, Wisconsin - The holiday season was saddened by the passing of two old settlers, when on Wednesday afternoon the deaths of Charles Kenyon and Peter Wood, senior occurred.

Charles Kenyon, for nearly forty years a resident Galesville and vicinity, passed away at the St. Francis hospital, La Cross, aged 77 years. Several weeks ago he submitted to an operation for a ruptured appendix. He recovered and returned to his home, and though weak, was about town. On Saturday his condition became alarming and on Monday he was returned to the hospital, where an operation for adhesions was performed. He failed to rally, and the end came about 1:30 on Wednesday.

Mr. Kenyon was born at Darlington, Wisconsin on September 22, 1850. With his parents, he came to Trempealeau County at an early age, and the family settled at Arcadia. Here he attained manhood, and in 1881 married Miss Matilda Hensel of the town of Glencoe, Buffalo. For a time the Kenyon home was at Arcadia, then they became farmers at Centerville, later removing to Galesville, which has been their home since. Three children were born to them, two of whom survive with their mother. They are Eugene and Miss Violet, both making their home with their mother here. The youngest son, Archie, passed away about fourteen years ago. One brother, Alfonso, also survives, living in California. For many years, Mr. Kenyon was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, which he continued to the time of his death.

Funeral services have been arranged for Saturday afternoon, and will be conducted by the Rev. J. J. Pauly, at the Presbyterian church, with interment at Evergreen cemetery at Centerville.

Charles was the third son of Lyman Kenyon and Melissa Phelps. (His headstone lists his birth year as 1859, which is in error. He was born in 1850). He was listed as an infant on the 1850 Federal Census in Centre, Lafayette, Wisconsin, USA. Centre later became Darlington.

Charles was shown as a 10-year-old, on the 1860 census living in Center, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, with his parents. The post office is listed as Darlington.

Charles was shown as a 20-year-old, living with his parents in Arcadia, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin on the 1870 census. The post office was listed as Osseo.

On the 1880 census, Charles was listed as 29 years old. He was single living with his widowed mother, listed as a farm laborer, in Arcadia, Wisconsin.

At this point, his parents had sold the homestead, but his mother appeared to remain living on it, as his father, Lyman died earlier in 1880. Charles appeared to be living with his mother to help her out during this time.

The following year, Charles married Matilda Hensel, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Edward Hensel and Wilhelmina M Moldenhauer, both immigrants from Germany.

Two wedding ceremonies were held. One 23 Oct 1881, Glencoe, Buffalo, Wisconsin, primarily for the bride's family and 27 Oct 1881, Arcadia, Trempealeau, Wisconsin, for the groom's family. Many of the Hensel family lived in Buffalo County, while the groom's family were in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. His mother, Melissa, and brother Daniel Kenyon were listed as witnesses.
