Manuel was born in Ribeira das Taínhas, São Miguel island, Azores to Manoel Correia "Viola" and Anna Maria de Mello. He immigrated to America twice. The first time, he was about 12 years old and became homesick, so his sisters sent him back. He grew to adulthood on the island. At the age of 23, he married Maria do Rosario Furtado in Ribeira das Tainhas. Two years later, in February of 1916, he and Maria came to America (Riverpoint in West Warwick, Rhode Island) "to make a fortune" (as the phrase was back in that day). After arriving in America, they possibly had 7 children, 5 of which lived to adulthood.
