Sister Hilda was born in West Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island as the seventh and last child to Manuel Correia and Maria do Rosario Furtado. She joined the order of the Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM). She held a Master's Degree and was a kindergarten teacher at St. Mary Academy in Providence, Rhode Island.
