Early member of Coker's Chapel Methodist Church. Daniel McInnis is a son of Jane and John McInnis. He married Narcissa Coker on October 6, 1859, in Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

Daniel McInnis, husband and father of 2 small sons, enlisted as a Private on March 12, 1862, in Company A, 37th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, at Marion, Mississippi. His brother, Lafayette John McInnis enlisted in the same company on February 8, 1862, and served as 1st Lieutenant of their company. Daniel McInnis was at home sick during September and October 1862, as shown on the muster roll for Company A. He had returned by November, and both he and his severely wounded brother Lafayette were captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. Daniel was reported in a hospital on September 28, 1863, was exchanged and returned to duty with Company A. He received a flesh wound to his right arm near Atlanta, Georgia, on July 20, 1864, and was sent to a hospital in Macon, Georgia. On March 28, 1865, Sergeant McInnis was transferred to Way Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi.

The McInnises's young son William Thomas died in 1866. Another son, John Edwin McInnis, was born on February 1, 1867, but Narcissa died later that year. Before 1870 Daniel married Narcissa's younger sister, Lucy Coker.
