Mr. Apodaca was one of 37 reportedly killed in Pegnitz, Germany when their CH-47 helicopter crashed due to a mechanical failure described as metal fatigue in one of its rotors.

He was serving with 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry - Pershing I medium-range nuclear missile group deployed in West Germany at the time.

His heavy mortar platoon was returning from a live-fire exercise at Grafenwohr. They were being transported by the 4th Aviation Co. of the 15th Aviation Group.
