Soldat Anthony Rivière
8e Régiment parachutiste d'infanterie de marine 8e RPIMa
8th Marine Infantry Airborne Regiment based in Castres (Tarn)

Aged 22, he was an avid athlete and university graduate who left a promising civilian career to join the military. He leaves behind his parents Alexis and Madelaine.

He was one of ten French soldiers killed, along with 21 others injured, during a Taliban ambush in Sarobi district about 50 km from Kabul. They were serving with the NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The victims were repatriated and after a service inside the church of Saint-Louis des Invalides on 21 August, the coffins were carried into Courtyard of Honour at les Invalides where France honour their war dead. The commemoration ceremony was attended by the families, comrades, President, Prime Minister, government ministers and parliamentarians.

Each soldier was posthumously awarded with a promotion in rank, the Croix de la valeur militaire and the Croix de Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to the "bravery, tenacity of these young soldiers, who deserved admiration."

The latest casualties bring to 24 the number of French soldiers killed in Afghanistan since France first sent troops in 2002.
