Mr. Collins died Thursday, August 21, 2008, in Longview, Texas.
He was born September 7, 1921, in Hope, Arkansas. His family moved to East Texas when he was 10 years old. Mr. Collins was a graduate of Sabine High School, and he was recently recognized as the first quarterback of the Sabine High School. Mr. Collins attended Kilgore Junior College and Texas A&M University of Kingsville.
He served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being responsible for delivery of some 38 missions of U.S. Marines on the beach heads in the South Pacific.
After his discharge, Mr. Collins went to work for Sun Oil Co., where he worked for more than 40 years. He was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Liberty City, where he was a deacon and loved to greet people on Sunday mornings.
Mr. Collins was a sportsman who loved hunting, basketball and watching the University of Texas sports. He loved his family and was a very devoted husband who loved being with his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Collins is survived by his wife, Dorothy Frances Bamberg Collins of Liberty City; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Tanya Collins of Houston; he was affectionately known as "June" by his sister, Hazel Collins Rucker of Kilgore; a granddaughter, Jamie Oliver and her husband, David of Bellaire; a great-granddaughter, Ava Oliver of Bellaire; and several nieces and nephews.
