Funeral services for James Earnest Guthrie, Freedom's best known citizen and businessman, were held Wednesday afternoon in the school auditorium. Rev. G. B. Vaughn was in charge and burial was made in Freedom Cemetery. He died on May 24, 1942 at Halstead Hospital in Halstead, Kansas. He was born on September 14, 1868 near Toledo, Illinois to Edward and Sarah Jane (Dalson) Guthrie. He married Sarah Frances Martino on March 5, 1891 in Thayer, Kansas. They moved to the Freedom area in 1900. He owned and operated Service Oil & Gas Company and was one of the most beloved citizens of this community. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his widow; his daughters, Jean Cordia Baker and Maud Nellie Reily; and three grandsons.
