St. Joseph Record June 16, 1926 page 1
John Penny, 79 years old, a Civil War veteran, died at 6:45 o'clock Wednesday night at his home, 114 Warrington avenue, Vermilion Heights, following an extended illness.
The deceased was the son of Joseph and Rhoda Penny and was born August 22, 1846 at West Jefferson, Madison county, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Penny; three daughters: Belle Smith of Tilton, Illinois; Mrs. Mary Striggs of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Leona Lanham of Milwaukee, Wis., and two sons: Otis and Jacob, both residing at Vermilion Heights. Three grandchildren also survive.
The body was taken to the Pape funeral home and will be taken to the late residence Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock this (Friday) morning at the residence. Burial will be in Patterson cemetery south of here.
Mr. Penny spent Decoration day here May 30th and made a talk from the speaker's stand and on that occasion made the remark that it would probably be the last time he would ever have a chance to see us and speak to us. He is the last of the members that made up the G. A. R. Post at this place, and was the only Civil War veteran to be present at our Decoration Day services, and his death means that next year there will be none.
