Anthony Takes Nike Command

Maj. Charles C. Anthony took command of the 5th Missile Battalion at Dyess AFB Wednesday as the Army Nike-Hercules unit drew a day nearer to its demise as an anti-aircraft missile group.
Maj. Anthony, of 3650 Yale, [Abilene, Texas] succeeds Lt. Col. Richard S. Craig, who departed early Wednesday on leave prior to reporting to a new Army assignment in Washington.
No precise date has been set for the close-down of the Army battalion. It was ordered phased out in December by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara.
The battalion, along with dozens of others of armed forces units, will be affected by a decision which McNamara says will save $410 million.
Operation of the local Army unit is not expected to extend beyond June 30, final date of the 1965-66 fiscal year.
No trend in reassignment of personnel has yet developed, although one official said that some men quite likely will be sent to Viet Nam.
Two possibilities exist for future use of the missiles, located at the Phantom and Barkeley firing batteries; Re-issue them for use by other missile units, or fire them for practice at the McGregor range in New Mexico.
Electronics and radar equipment will go back into supply channels for re-issue to other units. It is thought that perhaps more than half of the German Shepherd sentry dogs will be separated from their handlers and retrained.
The new commander of the unit has been its executive officer since December. A native of Boston, Mass., he spent five years as an enlisted man before receiving his commission as an officer in 1950. He then served 16 months in Korea.
Prior to being transferred to Dyess in April 1965 as an intelligence officer, Maj. Anthony was with headquarters of the Northern Army Group in Germany, a NATO command.
Maj. Anthony's wife, Lois, is from Wichita, Kan.

When asked by his kids, "Dad, why don't you ever smile in your military photos?" Tony's reply was always the same, "I AM smiling."
