Born to Wright Alligood and Ellenor Mann Alligood. They lived in Decatur County, Georgia, until 1831. That year his parents moved back to Laurens County to take over some property his father, Hillery had given them. Only John Wiley and his brother William had been born at the time of moving back to Laurens County.
In the Federal Census of 1850, Wright and Ellender and seven of their children were living in Laurens County, on one of Hillery#2's land portions. The oldest at the home was John W. (20 years old at the time) and the youngest was Thomas M. at age 6.

About 1853, most of this group moved to Colquitt County, Ga. This new location was on the upper branch of the Ochlockonee River, about 40 miles above the Florida border.

May 3 1863. Served until April 6, 1864. Received the Iron Cross. ("Confederat Soldiers in Colquitt County Georgia" by Ellen Payne Odom")
