Sessions died on Sept. 27, 1836, at the age of 84, but not before he helped found the town and construct a mill that attracted Irish immigrants looking for work.

"He was at the Boston Tea Party. He was a Revolutionary War vet. He was a farmer and a leader in town," explained Connie C. Witt, chair of the Hampden Historical Commission. "The Sessions family started the first factory in town; he was the one who caused a lot of people to come here.
