Daughter of William Herman Buckingham and Levitta Smith, wife of Welden Avery, whom she married on Dec 19, 1849, and mother of Anna Elisabeth (married Rev. Jared Sweet Tillinghast) and Joseph William Avery.

On July 6, 1899, Mary A. Barteau transferred to the South Haven Presbyterian Church, Brookhaven, New York, by certificate from the the Methodist Episcopal Church in Islip, L.I.

In 1900, Mary E. Barteau, aged 71, widowed, was living in the home of her daughter, Anna E. Avery, aged 48, on South Country Road, Brookhaven, NY. Anna was shown to be a farmer. Also living in the household was servant, Louise S. Rapevyea, aged 22.

Obituary - Patchogue, L.I., January 29- Mrs. Mary A. Barteau, aged 84, died at Grafton Farms, the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie E. A. Tillinghast, in South Haven yesterday. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, the Rev. Mr. Allen officiating. Interment will be in Patchogue.
