She was the widow of Allen K. Bird who died unexpectedly while swimming in Long Island Sound in August of 1983.
According to the documentation of her birth*, Bernice was born to Joseph Ellsworth Searles and Marian Johnson at her maternal grandmother's home on 5 Feb 1915. Bernice was brought up by this grandmother, Alice Coddington Merrill and her second husband Elmer Merrill, and was known as Bernice Merrill prior to her first marriage.
She married first Elwyn Andrews Murdock on 5 May 1934 in New Haven, Connecticut and second to Newton Tower Murray on 22 Jun 1940, in Hamden Connecticut. Her third marriage to, Allen Kennedy Bird was in Madison, Connecticut on 19 Jun 1959.
She was a licensed practical nurse, having worked at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
She was a member of the Church of the Open Door in Clinton. She loved to sing her favorite hymns, her deep alto voice adding depth to any sanctuary in which she worshipped. At home, her love of music and her Lord prompted her to learn to play the organ, which she oft-times practiced to the delight of her grandchildren.
She and Allen maintained a beautiful rose garden at their home in Guilford, Connecticut, and shared their golden years with a much loved collie, Heather, whose memory survives in many family photos.
Bernice was survived by her only child, a son, and five grandchildren. Her grandson, Craig Andrews Dresser, died 2 June 2021.
