Park-like Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1848 by some of New Haven's most prominent citizens, after older and smaller burial grounds were running out of space. Located in the West River neighborhood on Ella T. Grasso Builevard, the cemetery's 85 acres now have approximately 85,000 graves. A number of notable people are interred in the cemetery, including 5 governors, 3 lieutenant governors, and a child of Leo Tolstoy. The cemetery also has a ghost known as "Midnight Mary." A memorial chapel was added to the cemetery in 1902, and in 1956 the state's second crematorium was built at Evergreen. New administrative offices were added in 1999, and the cemetery is managed by a non-sectarian, non-profit organization. A smart-phone app is available to assist in tours, visits to the cemetery, and locating gravesites.
