Father Charles J. Fabing, 82, died at St. Peter's Hospital in the early morning of May 15, 1997, after fighting cancer for several years.
A Vigil Service will be held at the Cathedral of Saint Helena, Sunday, May 18, at 7 p.m. Most Reverend Alex J. Brunett, Bishop of Helena, will celebrate the Funeral Liturgy at the Cathedral of Saint Helena, on Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. Burial will be with his family in Valparaiso, Ind.
Charles John Fabing was born June 6, 1914, in Valparaiso, the son of Walter and Kathryn Reagan Fabing. After education at Quigley Seminary in Chicago and Dominguez Seminary in Compton, Calif., he was ordained a priest for the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart (Claretian Missionaries) on Sept. 8, 1939.
While a member of the Claretian Missionaries, Father Fabing served as a professor, a chaplain to Federal Institutions, and U.S. Army chaplain. As Army chaplain he was assigned to Fort Missoula, Mont. and decided to join the Diocese of Helena.
He began his service to the Diocese of Helena in 1950, continuing as military chaplain. In 1952, he became the chaplain of St. Joseph Hospital in Deer Lodge. In 1958, he affiliated with the St. James Mission Society and served in various assignments in Peru and Mexico. In 1977, he returned to the Diocese and served St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Sunburst until 1981. He then accepted senior status in the Diocese, but returned to active ministry as pastor of St. Bartholomew Parish in White Sulphur Springs in May of 1982, serving there for 12 years.
Since his retirement in July 1994, Father Fabing has had residence at Carroll College. He also has assisted parishes in Washington and North Carolina.
He is survived by a brother, Bill, of Boulder, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. Fellow priests of the Diocese will serve as pallbearers.
