The son of Thomas R. & Margaret Cooper (Kennedy) Bowers, he married Eva C. Moritz and fathered Mary Margaret (b. 12/21/61 - married Charles W. Flemming) and Sarah Louise (b. 08/27/64 - married Joseph Hippensteel). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He is in the company register as "Bowers." He also enlisted in Harrisburg September 12, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 15 as a private with Co. K, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865.

He died at age 87-3-31 from "softening of the brain."

NOTE: The grave marker and the previous post both erroneously report Leander Bower's military service. He never served with either the 87th Pennsylvania or 187th Pennsylvania Infantry.
