Alfred was born at the Lac qui Parle Mission, Chippewa County, Minnesota where his father was a missionary. He helped establish the Santee Normal Training School in 1870 and was its principal until his death. He was a preacher near the Laguna/Acoma Indian outpost in McCartys, Cibola County, New Mexico when he died.
