Caleb Smith Amidon, son of John Smith Amidon and Phoebe Wilcox, was born June 1830 in Vermont. An alternate birth date of 1 August 1827 is used on some records. He enlisted in the 16th Artillery of New York State during the Civil War. He died in the Petersburg Hospital of fever on 7 July 1865, and was buried in Fair Ground Hospital Burying Ground.

He married Mariah Truman who was born about 1829 in New York.
