W.M. Allen Dies, Funeral Is Tuesday


Walter Martain Allen, 81, of 1000 Avenue L, Nw., died at 10:27 a.m. Sunday in Childress General Hospital. He had been ill for about two weeks.


Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. Joe Allen, and burial will be in Childress cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home.


Pallbearers will be S.L. Dowis, Toddy Greer, Aubrey Rogers, Arthur Caradine, Johnny Robinson and LeRoy Gaines.


Mr. Allen, a retired merchant and groceryman, was born January 20, 1883, at Buda, Tex.


He and his wife had made their home here since 1930 coming here from Quanah where he had operated a grocery business several years. Arriving here, he established the Allen Grocery and Produce, and retired in 1951. He married Miss Mary Allice Bonner January 1, 1902, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.


Survivors are his widow of the home; two sons, James E. of San Antonio and W.M. Jr., of Childress; five daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Barnett of Lubbock, Mrs. Jack Davis of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Ruby Dickerson of San Angelo, Mrs. R.M. Trigg of Childress, Mrs. William R. Jones of Cee Vee; one brother, Edgar Allen of San Gabriel, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
