Twenty-year old Elisha, while a resident of Strafford, Orange County, Vermont, enlisted in the army on June 19, 1775, mustering at and marching from Albany, New York. From Albany he marched to Skenesborough, New York on Lake Chaplain, and from there to St. Johns, Chambly, Quebec, Canada in an attempt to take the fort but was repulsed. He retreated back to Île aux Noix, twelve miles south of St. Johns. During that expedition to Canada he served as a private in Captain Elisha Benedict’s company, Colonel Goose Van Schmick’s 2nd New York regiment under Major General Richard Montgomery. The failed 1775 invasion of Quebec lead to Elisha being taken prisoner for a while. Afterwards, he returned to his home in Strafford. He enlisted in January of 1777 and served four months as private in Captain Abner Seelye’s company, Colonel Seth Warner’s regiment. He enlisted sometime in June of 1777 and served about five months as sergeant in Captain Elisha Burton’s company, Colonel Samuel Herrick’s New Hampshire regiment, during which he was in engagement near George Landing and served as Lieutenant in said company. He also served under Captain John Alger in Vermont. Early in December of 1777, immediately after his return to Strafford, Elisha was appointed second Lieutenant, Captain Samuel Young’s company, Colonel Timothy Bedel’s New Hampshire regiment and served six months, stationed most of the time at Haverhill, New Hampshire. Elisha served in Captain John Powell’s Vermont company in August of 1780 on the alarms at Barnard and Royalton when those towns were attacked by Native-Americans.

After the Revolutionary War, Elisha lived in Strafford. Later he moved to Cayton County, New York, then to Livonia Township, Livingston County, New York.

By the Act of Congress on June 7, 1832, legislation was passed allowing pensions for veterans who had served in the Revolutionary War. On September 28, 1832, Elisha, at the age of seventy-seven, submitted paperwork to obtain his much deserved pension.
