Louise "Caroline" Ratier, the daughter of Jean Ratier and Catherine Emerante Rembert, was the wife of Jules Michel Blanchet, a pharmacist who practiced in New Orleans. In 1850 the family was in the process of moving from New Orleans to New Iberia where Jules planned on opening up a new pharmacy. Caroline and her children had already left and were staying with her mother (who lived on the West side of Iberia St. between Washington and St. Peter Street) while Jules was closing his business affairs and making final preparations to join his family. Unfortunately a small pox epidemic swept the New Orleans area at that time, and Jules stayed behind to help only to contract the disease himself, which turned out to be fatal.
