Flavious Josephus Hawkins died at his home in the Hawkins Chapel Community. His childhood was spent 10 miles north of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. At the age of 20 years, he moved with his father's family from Kentucky to Nacogdoches, County, Texas. The family moved from there to Denton County, Texas. In the 1870s, he and his brother, S.J. Hawkins moved with their families to Young County.

Flavious Josephus Hawkins was a member of the Methodist religion and the Hawkins Chapel bears his name as he and his brother erected the house of worship. His brother preceded him in death.
