Born in New York, Foster was 21, and living in Floyd Co., Iowa, when he enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Infantry as a Private on Feb 27, 1864. (Reportedly a Veteran, probably in relation to preceding service in another regiment.)

He transferred almost immediately into the "Unassigned Company" of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on March 16, 1864. While waiting to be assigned to Co. H, an active company, Foster died of disease on March 26, 1864.

Per War Dept. Records he was originally buried in Davenport, Iowa and moved to Rock Island Cemetery date unknown, document is dated 1932.

His wife had applied for her widow's pension on Aug 9 1864. Her application is #60404, and her certificate #42648. A minor child also applied for a pension payment. The application is #144,149, and the certificate #109,123.

Suggested edit: For clarification - Samuel served with the 3rd Iowa for a year (5/1861 - 5/1862) before being discharged for disability. He apparently felt he had recovered enough to reenlist with the 4th Cavalry in 1864, but sadly died a month after enlisting (10 days after being mustered).
