John Dawson Sr my 3rd great gandfather was in the War of 1812 and was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of River Raisen. He was taken to Canada by the Indians where he was ransomed by friends. He was also in the Black Hawk War of 1831. The town of Dawson in Sangamon County was named for John. John served three times as a Representative to the State Legislature. The Sangamon County delegation to the Legislature in 1836-37 was composed of two Senators and seven Representatives (John and Abraham Lincoln) being two of these Representatives) noted then as the "Long Nine". Their exact height was 6 feet and they were remarkable in talents and influence no less than in statue. John was also a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1848 and active in securing the removal of the State Capital to Springfield, IL. John had originally been buried in a small family plot in Dawson Cemetery near his home. He married Carey Jones 9 Oct 1817 at Nicholas County, KY.
