Hugh emigrated from Glassgow with his three children (Thomas, Agnus and Hugh Jr) on 15 July 1849 on The Herald from Greenock Scotland arriving in New York 26 Aug 1849. After spending some time in Philadelphia with relatives, Hugh and his children came to Illinois to settle about 1850.
