FARM LEADER DIES AT 75 IN RIVERTON

Riverton - J. Melvin Petersen, Riverton, Salt Lake County agricultural leader, died of natural causes Saturday, 5:30 a.m., in a Salt Lake hospital. Mr. Petersen was 75.
He served for five years as chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Program of Salt Lake County. For his service, he received two citations and the office was chosen as the most outstanding in the state.
Mr. Petersen also was cited for his meritorious service during his 12-year tenure as district supervisor of the U. S. Soil Conservation Service.
In February, 1946, he became president of the Salt Lake County Farm Bureau and served for 10 years.
Active in community affairs, he was a member of Riverton's first town board and justice of the peace for eight years.
Mr. Petersen was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was born on Oct. 16, 1888, South Jordan, a son of James and Sophia Simonsen Petersen. He married Teenie N. McSporran, Oct. 7, 1907. The marriage later was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Survivors include his widow; sons, daughters, Mrs. E. (Leona) Heugly, Mrs. LeRoy (Gladys) Steadman, both Midvale; Arch M., Salt Lake City; Roy C., Donald B., both Riverton, and Mrs. Edward O. (Elaine) Mann, Puerto Rico; 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; brother and sister, Clyde E., South Jordan and Mrs. Olive Morse, San Francisco.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in Riverton Second Ward LDS Chapel. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State, Midvale, Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the South Jordan Cemetery.
