Jacob answered the Call of Duty leaving his motherless children at home. He rode off on horseback to Louisiana and returned the same way. The children were left for neighbors and friends to care for and had only watermelon and what food they could raise to eat. Jacob was a farmer and rancher and a devout Christian. He died in 1909 and is buried in the Bauersville Cemetery in Mason County, Texas with other members of the family.
