Jacob J. Bauer was born on August 17, 1846 in Germany. He was married to Julia Gatt and together they had five children before she died leaving him alone to raise the children. According to the Muster Roll in the Texas State Library, Jacob Bauer is shown as belonging to the Mason County Minute Men, which was organized on March 25, 1861. He also served in Company E of the 1st Texas Cavalry; C.S.A. Jacob lost a thumb when an enemy bullet struck it and was also shot in his side.
