A Pensacola native, Bob was born on February 25, 1928 at the Old Sacred Heart Hospital. He was a proud graduate of Auburn University and a decorated war veteran, having fought in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving his country for 22 years. Following his army career, he taught for 20 years in the Escambia County School System.
Bob remained active until his passing. He enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the Panama Canal Zone with his family. He was an avid fisherman and especially enjoyed deep sea fishing. He was an active member of the Gulf Breeze Power and Sail Squadron, a former member of the Pensacola and Gulf Breeze Lions Club and the former president of the Villa Venyce homeowners association.
Bob is survived by a large and loving extended family, including his wife of 54 years, Alida Stewart Newton, son James (Jim) Newton, daughter Marie (Rie) Newton Steele, son Bruce Newton, sister Mary Newbill and her husband Bud, sister Nancy Shaver and her husband Harry, sister Maggie Goforth and her husband Bob, sister Dixie Sansom and her husband Jerry, sister Roberta Wiggand, brother John Newton, brother Walter Newton and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved little dog, Max, the wonder dog.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 1, 2008 at St. Frances of the Assisi in Gulf Breeze. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Internment will take place on Monday, August 4, 2008 at Barrancas National Cemetery with military honors. Those wishing to attend should meet at St. Francis of the Assisi in Gulf Breeze at 10:15 a.m. to proceed to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Lung Association or to the charity of their choice.
