He was born on November 18, 1923, in Alverno son of the late Joseph and Ida (Neumeyer) Backus.
Raymond was employed with Aluminum Rolling Mills for many years, retiring in 1995. He was also a member of St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Manitowoc.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law: Joseph and Margaret Louise Backus, Two Rivers; Scott and Shirley Backus, Raymond Backus, all of Manitowoc; three daughters and sons-in-law: Tammy and Bill Lande, Cleveland, Tennessee, MaryJo and Scott Garbe, Cleveland, WI, Jennifer Backus and Aaron Kowalski, Manitowoc; twenty grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; mother of his children: Joette Backus, Manitowoc; two brothers and one sister-in-law: Allen and Genevieve Backhaus, Manitowoc, James Backus, Kaukauna; two sisters: Alice Eisner, Manitowoc and Ruth Spatchek, Reedsville, two sisters-in-law; Gertrude Backus and Ethel Backus, both of Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
Raymond was also preceded in death by one granddaughter; Hope Mary Backus, two brothers: Paul and Bob Backus; two sisters Marie Miller and Charlotte Ebenhoe; one sister-in-law: Darlene Backus.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Alverno.
